THERE IS & THERE ARE 

Hi everyone! Hola a todos. My name is Mr Pea y juntos vamos a aprender a hablar en inglés. Hoy vamos a trabajar con there is y there are. ¿Estáis preparadas y preparados? Here we go!

There is y There are pueden ser traducidos como hay. 

THERE IS

There is lo usaremos cuando sólo hay una cosa, un animal o una persona. Por ejemplo:

There is a book on my desk - Hay un libro en mi escritorio.

Existe una forma contraída de There is y es There's.

THERE ARE

There are lo usaremos cuando hay mas de una cosa, animal o persona. Por ejemplo:

There are two cakes in the fridge - Hay dos tartas en la nevera.

La forma contraída de there are es there're.

FORMA NEGATIVA

La forma negativa de there is y there are es there is not / there isn't y there are not / there aren't  respectivamente. Por ejemplo:

There isn’t a bank near here. - No hay ningún banco cerca.

There aren’t any cookies left. - No quedan galletas.

FORMA INTERROGATIVA

La forma interrogativa de there is y there are  es is there? y are there?  respectivamente. Por ejemplo:

Is there any food in the fridge?- ¿Hay comida en el frigorífico?

Are there any more apples?. - ¿Quedan manzanas?

Recuerda que para realizar una respuesta corta usaremos Yes, there is / No there isn't para el singular y Yes, there are / No, there aren't para el plural.

EJERCICIOS

Vamos a practicar lo que hemos aprendido. Completa la frase:

1.  There ____ a dog in the living room. [is]

2. There ____ any bottles of water left. [aren't]

3. There ____some books on the table [are]

4. How many dice ____ there in the box? [are]

Y esto ha sido todo. Como ves esta última pregunta tenía trampa ya que dice  aunque no acaba en s es plural, ya que significa dados. Es importante conocer este tipo de plurales para saber si debes usar is o are. ¿Qué otras palabras conoces que tengan este tipo de plurales irregulares?
